Four-star combo guard J.J. Starling will be on his visit to Duke this weekend. Brian spoke with commit Kyle Filipowski about Starling this week. Here’s what he said.
“I’m all in for him. I know he’s a great player. Great shooter. Great guy. I couldn’t see how he could fit in better at a place other than Duke. We’re just going to have to wait and see on that one.
“I feel confident with all of our guys that have gone on visits - going back to Jaden and Dereck, so I know that JJ is going to enjoy his time. This is really the vision that Coach Scheyer has for the 2022 class.
“I’m all in on that vision. I feel very confident with what he’s trying to put together. And I know that the guys he’s recruiting can see that as well.”
You can sense the confidence from Kyle when speaking with him about Starling and Mark Mitchell. He particularly seems to believe the visit can lock this one up. Nothing groundbreaking with that obviously, but his tone and excitement speaks volumes.
Kyle's been awesome from the peer recruiting standpoint. The first commit of the Scheyer era so to see him believe in him has been huge. Hard to bet against this staff right now with any recruit. I'm in the camp that the visit gets this done and Starling announces shortly after.
Kyle has been so positive and encouraging for every one of the recruits we’ve had on the radar. Perfect starting piece for this class and the brotherhood 2.0!
Yeah, he's another in a long line of guys that were the first to commit in his class that really helped attract other elite talent. You're right, he's been positive and encouraging.
However long Scheyer’s Duke career lasts it’s hard not seeing the parallels with this class and K’s first big class. The ultimate belief from especially Kyle with nothing more than a vision is exactly what you hear guys like Bilas and Johnny say about K.
Starling has that under the radar player that could provide an impact such as Stanley. I think his skills don’t overlap with a PG or a WG bc he fits on and off the ball. In recent vids he looks like he’s filled out some and a good 6-3+. Yes, there are the 5 star players but Starling is one of the players I am really hoping commits to Duke.
Starling is a big time player who should see a jump in his ranking. A once perceived Syracuse lean, I’d have to imagine Duke’s NIL presentation will put them over the top.
Yeah, not a lot confidence that this will be anyone but ND. As I've been reaching out to sources no one has expressed much reason to believe otherwise. There's always the chance, but I don't see it happening.
Yeah, as someone who has been the most confident on Mitchell for over 2 years now, I'm not getting good vibes. Can't get Mark to really respond back to me, which I understand. He's at Sunrise and trying to focus on his decision. People close to him have been changing their tune a bit to me. If he makes it out of this weekend and keeps the Duke visit, everything should be good.
I heard Mitchell gets “hyped” during all his visits and a lot of chatter is spread during that time then settles once the visit is over. Was told that Mitchell likes all of his finalist BUT a deciding factor “could” be the incoming classes.
I’ve heard a lot of different things with Mark and I’ve wavered back and forth due to hearing a lot of things but I’ve been steadfast in Mark to Duke since 2019, and I’m back to that.
This is shaping up to be an incredible class. Even more impressive considering a first-year head coach is doing this. Looking forward to the Scheyer era.

Agreed

Have heard they have a vision for Starling and the kid is receptive to that.
I'm a little worried about the hometown orange. They can give him pt immediately. I think that's been the delay for Starling and Mitchell.
Nope...He's Duke to lose. I'm not betting against Scheyer with any player right now. He's 4 for 4. 5 for 5 if u count Foster

Something might have to be said for the likely retirement of Coach Boeheim after both his sons graduate this year!

All it took was one to believe in him and it really took off. He's got a great staff around him as well that can really connect with recruits as well.

I think Duke and the NIL will be a big factor in a lot of these recruitments where people think the kid won't come due to a crowded backcourt and etc.
And he’s a very good shooter if I’m not mistaken? Having two excellent shooters in this class surrounding the elite talent, look out!
Yeah I think he’s considered one of the best in the class.
Then if we are able to get any combination of Roach, Moore, Keels back, we are in excellent shape.
I am placing a fan CB of 10 confidence for Starling to Duke.
At this point it’s hard to bet against Scheyer!
Anyone hearing about him ready to announce
Decision coming tomorrow. Expect it to be ND.
Thanks Tom. Brian, Clint or Tyler can you chime in on this?
Yeah, not a lot confidence that this will be anyone but ND. As I've been reaching out to sources no one has expressed much reason to believe otherwise. There's always the chance, but I don't see it happening.
Yep
I'm with Tom on this one. I've been in the camp it's ND for a bit now. Never bought the smoke/hype around Duke still being in it.
Interesting
Thanks Tyler
I understand UCLA but Kansas is out of nowhere
It has come out of nowhere for me too. More worried about Kansas than UCLA at the moment.
What’s the deal with Mitchell hearing we better hope he makes it out of Kansas without committing

I also heard that Duke is not out of it for JJ Starling
Is this true Tyler?
Wouldn’t put money on Starling come to Duke
I’m interested in Tyler’s take too. It was the word out of this weekend’s event that JJ was played in
Have you heard anything about notre dame being possible?
Yeah, that’s where my prediction is changing to.
Can you provide any basis behind that? Seems like a real quick 180
I would bet PT. Duke has a chance to be crowded. ND not so much
Bingo.
So is it over basically?
Nothing is ever certain in recruiting, but it's certainly trending that way.
Anything on his visit yet? Maybe he’s going to commit…
Not a lot coming out, still liking Duke here.
Got it
Curious to see if you guys have hears anything post visit
Still liking Duke here.
Is anyone willing to give a level of confidence for Starling to Duke?
Just like Tom said. I'll wait until the visit is over to be for sure.
I think there is confidence but the visit should clarify things.
Good to see familiar faces Tom!
Got is so a 4 or 5 right now
Dude.... they just said wait till after the visit 🤣
10 confidence here. This is Duke.
Kyle, bro… I heard it. Relax
All good tho my man
Not trying to be rude or anything, I was just saying you’re throwing out numbers that they didn’t even say.
This is about Mitchell but saw where bossi said he absolutely loves Cronin and staff and this is far from over in either direction
Just wait until CTC. It's post visit high once again, just like back in June.
Thanks Tyler
It seems like the minute a players commits to Duke, they jump right into recruiting others. Lively is hitting up Mitchell as are the others.
All the guys are all over Starling for his visit
My guess would be Jon would like to get as many committed players as possible to come to CTC and help lock Mitchell down.
You’d think those committed players would be chomping at the bit to join in at CTC to help out.
Turnert, do you think Jon will try to bring in the top juniors to CTC to be around the committed seniors?
At minimum I would think they may try and get Foster back. I haven’t heard any names yet.
