Now that Jaden Schutt has made his commitment to attend Duke University, all of the pressure is lifted and he's focused on his final basketball season and is zeroing in on helping the Blue Devils sign the rest of his class.
After his official visit to Durham, Schutt shutdown his recruitment and announced his pledge to be part of Jon Scheyer's first class. He spoke about his visit with Bull City Hoops.
Aside from the culture, history and prestige that he knew he'd experience on the visit, Schutt said that it was some additional things that made an impact on him during his 48 hours on campus.
"I didn't know how great Duke was, academically," he said. "Just the relationships with the coaches down there (made an impact) and the players were great to meet as well."
Schutt, a smooth, playmaking 6-foot-5 wing guard, is well-known for his ability to shoot the ball. But the Illinois guard is much more than that. He's a crafty driver, an above average athlete and he plays with great energy as a scorer and playmaker. In fact, the Duke coaches showed him a lot of game tape of players with a similar skill set that have thrived in Durham.
"They showed me JJ Redick, Coach (Jon) Scheyer, Grayson Allen and Luke Kennard," he told BCH. "They talked about how they let their shooters play loose and be confident, and that's when I feel my best. I feel at my best when I'm loose and confident, so I liked the presentation."
Schutt said that the staff's belief in him made him sure of his choice, and it played a big part in getting the eventual commitment done.
"It felt great," he said. "They obviously believe in my abilities so that just makes me so much more confident as well."
The history, success, tradition and people in and around the program all played a part in locking up the AAU circuit champion. And his goal of his time at Duke is one that all Blue Devil fans will love to hear.
"Four national championships," he said. "That's the goal."
Schutt, Dariq Whitehead and Kyle Filipowski make no bones about it; they want Dereck Lively, JJ Starling and Mark Mitchell to join them.
One of my favorites in the 2022 class. Smooth shooting stroke. He has one of them shots where he shoots and you think it's going in no matter what.
