Pro Insight Scout on Proctor
Bull City Hoops spoke with Pro Insight scout Michael Visenberg about Duke commitment Tyrese Proctor, who watched the Aussie guard up close at Nike Hoop Summit.
Duke commitment Tyrese Proctor is from Australia. The city of Durham is over 9,600 miles away from Sydney, the capital city of home country. So needless to say, the 6-foot-5 guard from Down Under will be playing his collegiate basketball a long way from home.
So what kind of player is he?
Bull City Hoops reached out to Oregon native, and respected basketball scout, Michael Visenberg of Pro Insight, who saw the flashy guard from the NBA Global Academy at the recent Nike Hoop Summit.
Visenberg, who we’ve known for years and sat with at many USA Basketball camps, spoke glowingly about the five-star 2023 prep star. Simply put, we trust his evaluations and put a lot of stock into what he says.
“Guard with good size, for the most part played off of the ball, though showed some handle and passing ability,” said Visenberg. “His shot looked good off the catch and he created some defensive events in practice.”
The Portland native noted that Proctor was streaky at times, but that his fluidity and floor savvy were very obvious to all of those in attendance.
“He did go through some quiet spots at times and did not get to the paint consistently. Still looked comfortable, moves well laterally and has tools to work with and showed feel for the game.”
Some of the highlights that stuck in Visenberg’s mind from the body of work included a barrage of three pointers and one particular play on the defensive side of the ball.
“He had quite a few catch and shoot three-pointers in the practices I was able to go to, Tuesday and Thursday,” he said. “And he had a really nice block on the perimeter.”
Some Duke fans have been torn in seeing how Proctor fits the scheme at Duke. Is he more of a point guard? Or an off-the-ball scorer? Maybe he’s a combo-guard who can play either spot.
Visenberg offered his thoughts.
“I see him as likely being the secondary playmaker — where he can do work off the ball and make quick decisions when he has it in his hands,” he said. “(He’s) able to hang with either guard spot on defense. Finding space and cutting off ball, likely doing a lot off movement. Think he would be best playing next to someone able to collapse the defense and get to the paint at a higher rate than he is able at this point.”
The five-star measured in at at 6-foot-5 and a half with shoes, weighed in at 180-pounds with a 6-foot-6 and a half wingspan and 8’4.25” standing reach. So his length will certainly be a welcomed addition to the perimeter for Jon Scheyer’s bunch.
While the Pro Insight scout struggled to come up with a player comparison for the Aussie combo-guard, one former Duke player’s role came to mind.
“Just looking through Duke’s past, I see some parallel’s between Proctor and DJ Steward. He’s bigger certainly, but I could see some similarities in role, possibly,” he said.
