Mookie Cook talks recruitment
Bull City Hoops correspondent Matt Whitfield spoke with super junior Mookie Cook.
Uber-talented Mookie Cook is rated in the top 10 of Rivals, ESPN, and 247 Class of 2023 recruiting rankings. Despite all this, he's just focused on this season and his new team having just transferred from Jefferson High School in Oregon to AZ Compass Prep.
“It feels great to be playing with high level guys each and everyday day,” said Cook on playing for AZ Compass Prep. “I’m just focusing on our team right now, winning each and every game. Anything I can do to win that’s what I want to do.”
Cook describes himself as a two-way player and says he wants to work on his guard skills the next two years.
“[I’m a] two-way player that can do everything, facilitate and get to the rim and shoot the three,” said Cook.
And for what he wants to work on Cook stated, “My guard skills just because I’m going to be a big guard but also more my catch and shoot and my handle.”
Being one of the top players in his class, Cook has heard numerous colleges. However, despite interest early on from Duke, Cook hasn’t heard from the Blue Devils in a while but he added, “I’ll look into that,” when asked if he’d take an unofficial visit there if more interest is shown.
Cook states his recruitment is mostly handled by his parents and his brother. And despite just taking an unofficial to Kentucky where he was offered in late October, he didn’t really tip his hand to indicate if he was leaning any particular way.
“Kentucky, Oregon, I just got Michigan not too long ago, Kansas, UCLA, USC, Gonzaga, Arizona. Those are the main ones,” Cook said when asked which schools are showing interest.
For now, Cook is just a baby-faced yet ultra-athletic junior. His AZ Compass Prep team was Max Preps’ preseason No. 1 ranked team and they will be thoroughly tested this season. They play a daunting schedule which includes Oak Hill, IMG, Dream City Christian, La Lumiere, Wasatch Academy, Westtown, and Huntington Prep.
There are so many top wings/forwards in the Class of 2023 that it seems like Cook is just getting lost in the shuffle for Duke. Mgbako is the main target and the Bowen, Buzelis, Stewart, and Jackson all have offers with Evans being a potential target as well. I'd love to see Duke show interest in Cook, but if it means losing out on Mgbako, no thanks.
