Jon Scheyer visits Brewster Academy
Jon Scheyer flew to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, earlier this week to get some evaluation time on two elite juniors.
Earlier in the week, when most of the college basketball fans were focused on the 2021 ACC Tip-off, Jon Scheyer quietly boarded a private plane to New Hampshire.
The 34-year-old coach in waiting was headed to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, to get some additional face-time with two elite 2023 prospects that are on his radar. Bull City Hoops confirmed the news with Jason Smith, the esteemed head coach at the beautiful, waterfront campus on Lake Winnipesaukee.
Brewster Academy has two of the top two juniors in America and Scheyer and the Duke staff have now logged multiple trips up to New England to watch them. Taylor Bol Bowen and Matas Buzelis, two extremely talented blue chip talents were the reason for the trek.
Bowen, a rangy forward with guard skills, was originally born in Egypt, and lived in Vermont, a state more famous for maple syrup than basketball prospects. He is the 23rd ranked national prospect, according to the 247Sports’ composite ranking. He holds over 20 offers and his head coach loves the things he can do on the court.
"Taylor is very versatile," said Smith. "He's able to defend and play several positions. Very skilled, with tremendous length and a 7-2 wingspan. Outstanding young man who would be an asset to any community."
Buzelis, who has already been written about on Bull City Hoops, is a 6-foot-10 guard, according to his coach, who has fluid perimeter skills, plenty of bounce and an array of scoring moves, along with the length and spring to protect the rim defensively. He is the No. 12-rated junior in the nation according to the 247 composite and all signs point to him cracking the top five in the coming future.
Duke isn't finished recruiting its 2022 class, as Mark Mitchell's visit for Countdown to Craziness happens this weekend, but the Blue Devils coaches are already zeroing in on their targets in the next class. Caleb Foster, a 6-foot-5 point guard is already on the bus and things are taking shape to show who the other top targets are.
Bull City Hoops does believe that both Buzelis and Bowen may already have offers from the Duke program, but we were unable to confirm them at the time of this article. Neither junior has announced it on their social media platforms, which seems to be a standard protocol these days for elite prep stars. Smith chose to comment on the culture of that.
"Offers do not need to be broadcasted to the world," he said. "Too many kids and coaches gather offers like it's an Easter egg hunt and broadcast for the world to see. Not really necessary."
I've seen reports that both have been offered by Duke. Hope we can land them for sure.
